Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.51%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Firstservice Corp (TO:FSV), which rose 5.88% or 2.50 points to trade at 45.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Shaw Communications Inc (TO:SJRb) added 5.46% or 1.44 points to end at 27.81 and Uni-Select Inc. (TO:UNS) was up 5.25% or 3.28 points to 65.72 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TO:WTE), which fell 18.30% or 4.84 points to trade at 21.61 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) declined 17.39% or 0.28 points to end at 1.33 and New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD) was down 11.36% or 0.41 points to 3.20.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 743 to 590 and 202 ended unchanged.
Shares in Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TO:WTE) fell to 3-years lows; down 18.30% or 4.84 to 21.61. Shares in Uni-Select Inc. (TO:UNS) rose to all time highs; up 5.25% or 3.28 to 65.72.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.93% to 18.26.
Gold for December delivery was down 2.68% or 31.50 to $1144.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.44% or 0.20 to hit $45.74 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.99% or 0.48 to trade at $48.56 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.21% to 0.7597, while CAD/EUR fell 0.23% to 0.6923.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.33% at 97.36.
