Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Financials, Consumer Discretionary and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.33% to hit a new 52-week low.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NuVista Energy Ltd . (TO:NVA), which rose 13.70% or 0.400 points to trade at 3.320 at the close. Meanwhile, Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:AAV) added 12.52% or 0.790 points to end at 7.100 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) was up 10.56% or 0.32 points to 3.35 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM), which fell 9.06% or 0.26 points to trade at 2.61 at the close. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) declined 7.57% or 1.00 points to end at 12.21 and PrairieSky Royalty Ltd (TO:PSK) was down 6.97% or 1.36 points to 18.15.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 908 to 462 and 178 ended unchanged.
Shares in HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) fell to 5-year lows; falling 9.06% or 0.26 to 2.61. Shares in Crescent Point Energy Corp. (TO:CPG) fell to 5-year lows; losing 7.57% or 1.00 to 12.21. Shares in PrairieSky Royalty Ltd (TO:PSK) fell to all time lows; falling 6.97% or 1.36 to 18.15.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.93% to 26.81.
Gold for February delivery was up 1.10% or 12.00 to $1101.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.96% or 0.88 to hit $28.70 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 2.17% or 0.62 to trade at $28.14 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.67% to 0.6905, while CAD/EUR rose 0.80% to 0.6338.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.04% at 99.14.
