Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Parkland Fuel Corporation (TO:PKI), which rose 5.98% or 1.72 points to trade at 30.48 at the close. Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) added 5.89% or 0.570 points to end at 10.240 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TO:BBU_u) was up 3.55% or 1.15 points to 33.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI), which lost 5.70% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.97 in late trade. Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) declined 5.19% or 0.25 points to end at 4.57 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) shed 5.00% or 0.22 points to 4.18.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 673 to 467 and 135 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.04% to 14.41.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.97% or 12.60 to $1281.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 3.53% or 1.85 to hit $50.56 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 3.33% or 1.83 to trade at $53.06 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.71% to 0.7420, while CAD/EUR fell 0.56% to 0.6925.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 99.68.
