Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Mining, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.95% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Paramount Resources Ltd . (TO:POU), which rose 16.64% or 0.97 points to trade at 6.80 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 11.33% or 0.35 points to end at 3.44 and Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) was up 8.13% or 0.26 points to 3.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR), which lost 7.48% or 0.47 points to trade at 5.81 in late trade. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) declined 6.93% or 6.55 points to end at 87.94 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) shed 6.88% or 0.33 points to 4.47.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 702 to 537 and 319 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 13.68% to 21.96 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.19% or 2.40 to $1232.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.81% or 0.61 to hit $34.36 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.68% or 0.25 to trade at $36.82 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.99% to 0.7456, while CAD/EUR rose 0.97% to 0.6857.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.04% at 98.32.
