Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.64% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF), which rose 6.10% or 0.76 points to trade at 13.22 at the close. OceanaGold Corporation (TO:OGC) added 4.80% or 0.180 points to end at 3.930 and Raging River Exploration Inc. (TO:RRX) was up 3.77% or 0.39 points to 10.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which lost 5.04% or 0.79 points to trade at 14.87 in late trade. Teck Resources Ltd B (TO:TECKb) declined 4.79% or 1.44 points to end at 28.65 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) shed 3.94% or 0.080 points to 1.950.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 721 to 483 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 19.05% to 7.48 a new all time low.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.44% or 5.15 to $1160.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to hit $52.83 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.11 to trade at $55.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.01% to 0.7617, while CAD/EUR rose 0.11% to 0.7170.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.09% at 101.09.
