STAMFORD, Conn. - United Rentals , Inc. (NYSE: NYSE:URI), the world's largest equipment rental company, has expanded its North American rental fleet with the introduction of battery energy systems for tower cranes. These systems, developed by Termaco in partnership with United Rentals, aim to support more sustainable construction practices by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The battery energy systems can be scaled up to 500kW and are designed to work in tandem with a generator, storing energy to power tower cranes primarily on battery power. The technology has the potential to decrease generator run time, thus reducing fuel use and emissions. Additionally, for smaller operations, the batteries can be charged using solar panels, offering a zero-emission power solution.

General contracting firm Award Construction has successfully utilized this system at their Riverbank Landing project in Edmonton, Canada. By switching from a 300kVA generator running continuously to a 100kW generator charging the battery system for just 2.5 hours daily, they achieved a 91% reduction in generator run time and an approximate 80% decrease in fuel usage and emissions.

Larry Worthington, Region Vice President, Power and HVAC at United Rentals, highlighted the system's alignment with contractors' economic and environmental objectives. Brian Hennessey, Construction Manager at Award Construction, expressed pride in their project being one of the first in Canada to fully power a tower crane with batteries.

United Rentals, a Fortune 500 company with over 1,500 rental locations across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, continues to offer a wide range of equipment for rent. This introduction of battery energy systems for tower cranes complements their portfolio of low and zero-emission solutions available for various industries.
