JOHANNESBURG, March 2 (Reuters) - South African police saidon Friday they were investigating the murder of a man whoseremains were discovered in a burnt out Taxify vehicle inPretoria, possibly the latest victim of a turf war between metertaxi drivers and their app-based rivals.
A number of vehicles operated by Taxify, an Estonianstart-up, and Uber UBER.UL have been torched in South Africaand police monitor hot spots including a commuter train stationin Johannesburg's upscale financial district of Sandton.
The victim was found in the boot of a Chevrolet Aveo.
"Both the cause and motive behind the incident are still asubject of investigation ... The identity of the deceased is yetto be confirmed," police said in a statement.
Conventional taxi operators accuse the app-based drivers ofpoaching customers with cheaper fares.
Uber operates in more than 600 cities and has faced protestsin France, Brazil and Hungary, and its drivers have beenthreatened or attacked in Kenya, Costa Rica and Australia.
