Patrick Chomet, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (OTC:SSNLF) (KS:005930), speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, said that Samsung's Galaxy S23 flagship smartphone sales have outstripped last year's S22 in a comparative period.
In an interview, Chomet reportedly said that the majority of buyers are choosing the most expensive version of the device.
The S23 went on sale on February 17 and features three models, the standard S23, the S23+, a slightly more expensive version, and the top-of-the-line S23 Ultra, which starts at $1,200.
According to CNBC, Chomet revealed that sales of the S23 are much better so far compared to last year's S22 and that the company, in the premium segment of its smartphones, has committed to "double-digit growth" this year.
He added that the S23 Ultra accounted for approximately 60% of global S23 pre-orders. Chomet stated that Samsung "expect, kind of a healthy portion of the mix, to be skewed to toward the premium."
The news will be a boost to the company, which had a tough 2022. It is also a welcome boost after a report by The Wall Street Journal on Monday that said consumers globally are increasingly choosing Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones over high-end Android smartphones, with Gen-Z users more regularly opting for the iPhone.
