Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Winpak Ltd. (TSX:WPK), which rose 2.17% or 1.01 points to trade at 47.63 at the close. Canaccord Genuity Group Inc (TSX:CF) added 1.96% or 0.13 points to end at 6.76 and Spin Master Corp (TSX:TOY) was up 1.69% or 0.72 points to 43.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nutrien Ltd (TSX:NTR), which lost 9.08% or 10.80 points to trade at 108.20 in late trade. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) declined 8.85% or 0.81 points to end at 8.34 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) shed 7.89% or 0.93 points to 10.86.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 693 to 308 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.17% to 24.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.67% or 27.95 to $1,649.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.75% or 3.34 to hit $85.77 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 2.93% or 2.77 to trade at $91.80 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.95% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.39% to 0.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.82% at 113.18.
