Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cronos Group Inc (TSX:CRON), which rose 2.92% or 0.12 points to trade at 4.23 at the close. Rogers Communications Inc (TSX:RCIb) added 2.64% or 1.43 points to end at 55.50 and First Capital Realty Inc . (TSX:FCR_u) was up 2.16% or 0.33 points to 15.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:EFR), which lost 6.53% or 0.62 points to trade at 8.88 in late trade. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) declined 6.49% or 0.12 points to end at 1.73 and IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG) shed 6.43% or 0.11 points to 1.60.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 697 to 319 and 103 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.70% to 21.62.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 2.08% or 35.55 to $1,673.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.84% or 3.40 to hit $85.08 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 3.55% or 3.34 to trade at $90.76 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.57% to 0.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 109.44.
