Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.66%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb), which rose 3.63% or 1.83 points to trade at 52.27 at the close. Air Canada (TO:AC) added 3.52% or 0.890 points to end at 26.170 and WestJet Airlines Ltd (TO:WJA) was up 3.52% or 0.67 points to 19.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG), which lost 14.01% or 1.610 points to trade at 9.880 in late trade. New Gold Inc (TO:NGD) declined 9.17% or 0.110 points to end at 1.090 and Cenovus Energy Inc (TO:CVE) shed 8.33% or 0.84 points to 9.25.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 715 to 363 and 109 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.79% to 18.26.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.37% or 4.60 to $1223.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 7.71% or 4.21 to hit $50.42 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 5.40% or 3.38 to trade at $59.22 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.36% to 0.7554, while CAD/EUR rose 0.24% to 0.6664.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 96.847.
