Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, REITs and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Empire Company Ltd (TSX:EMPa), which rose 4.08% or 1.38 points to trade at 35.20 at the close. BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) added 2.51% or 0.16 points to end at 6.54 and Badger Infrastructure Solutions Ltd (TSX:BDGI) was up 2.47% or 0.62 points to 25.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Algoma Steel Group Inc (TSX:ASTL), which lost 8.76% or 0.88 points to trade at 9.17 in late trade. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) declined 6.78% or 0.29 points to end at 3.99 and Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) shed 5.53% or 3.00 points to 51.28.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 702 to 267 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.15% to 11.90.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.10% or 21.30 to $1,923.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 4.26% or 3.09 to hit $69.44 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 3.93% or 3.03 to trade at $74.09 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.36% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.34% at 102.02.
