Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Algoma Steel Group Inc (TSX:ASTL), which rose 5.34% or 0.49 points to trade at 9.67 at the close. Crombie REIT (TSX:CRR_u) added 2.98% or 0.41 points to end at 14.15 and Quebecor Inc Class B (TSX:QBRb) was up 2.43% or 0.80 points to 33.71 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Osisko Gold Ro (TSX:OR), which lost 9.83% or 2.01 points to trade at 18.44 in late trade. Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) declined 5.99% or 0.39 points to end at 6.12 and BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) shed 5.01% or 0.36 points to 6.82.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 594 to 384 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.05% to 12.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.33% or 6.40 to $1,923.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.05% or 2.13 to hit $71.92 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.55% or 0.42 to trade at $76.67 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.44% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.22% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 103.03.
