Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Clean Technology, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.45% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Descartes Systems Group Inc (TSX:DSG), which rose 4.43% or 5.33 points to trade at 125.70 at the close. K92 Mining Inc (TSX:KNT) added 4.14% or 0.30 points to end at 7.55 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) was up 4.11% or 0.61 points to 15.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 8.24% or 0.85 points to trade at 9.46 in late trade. Barrick Gold Corporation (TSX:ABX) declined 4.96% or 1.19 points to end at 22.78 and Boralex Inc (TSX:BLX) shed 3.44% or 0.94 points to 26.40.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 514 to 421 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 8.19% to 15.19 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.79% or 18.90 to $2,401.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.09% or 0.08 to hit $85.33 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.12% or 0.11 to trade at $89.99 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.22% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 106.19.
