Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the IT, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TSX:ITP), which rose 5.14% or 0.73 points to trade at 14.94 at the close. Cineplex Inc . (TSX:CGX) added 3.80% or 0.32 points to end at 8.73 and Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TSX:ZZZ) was up 3.30% or 0.57 points to 17.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which lost 6.31% or 1.76 points to trade at 26.14 in late trade. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) declined 5.68% or 0.985 points to end at 16.365 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) shed 4.03% or 0.56 points to 13.32.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 602 to 451 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.02% or 18.45 to $1795.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.19% or 0.49 to hit $40.71 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.19% or 0.52 to trade at $43.27 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.51% to 0.7365, while CAD/EUR fell 0.24% to 0.6471.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 96.275.
