Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY), which rose 7.39% or 0.19 points to trade at 2.76 at the close. Nuvei Corp (TSX:NVEI) added 6.34% or 1.81 points to end at 30.37 and Russel Metals Inc . (TSX:RUS) was up 5.54% or 2.16 points to 41.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR), which lost 7.52% or 0.23 points to trade at 2.83 in late trade. Athabasca Oil Corp (TSX:ATH) declined 5.74% or 0.22 points to end at 3.61 and B2Gold Corp (TSX:BTO) shed 4.54% or 0.21 points to 4.42.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 565 to 454 and 102 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.95% to 11.24.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.97% or 41.10 to $2,048.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.08% or 0.80 to hit $73.27 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.85% or 0.67 to trade at $78.21 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.24% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.16% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 103.58.
