Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG), which rose 11.19% or 0.64 points to trade at 6.36 at the close. Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR) added 10.30% or 3.49 points to end at 37.38 and Secure Energy Services Inc . (TO:SES) was up 8.09% or 0.67 points to 8.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which lost 21.90% or 0.23 points to trade at 0.82 in late trade. Extendicare Inc (TO:EXE) declined 6.26% or 0.57 points to end at 8.54 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) shed 4.50% or 0.15 points to 3.18.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 556 to 273 and 86 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.31% to 16.28.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.25% or 3.15 to $1275.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 3.57% or 1.65 to hit $47.86 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.55% or 1.22 to trade at $49.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.28% to 0.7751, while CAD/EUR rose 0.16% to 0.6846.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.06% at 94.54.
