Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Real Estate and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN), which rose 11.53% or 1.15 points to trade at 11.12 at the close. Spin Master Corp (TSX:TOY) added 7.48% or 2.33 points to end at 33.48 and Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) was up 7.24% or 0.11 points to 1.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 9.41% or 0.53 points to trade at 5.10 in late trade. BROOKFIELD ASSET MANAGEMENT LTD (TSX:BAM) declined 3.88% or 1.55 points to end at 38.37 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TSX:BBU_u) shed 1.86% or 0.41 points to 21.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 760 to 269 and 90 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.50% to 14.10 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.04% or 0.65 to $1,824.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.90% or 2.21 to hit $78.44 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 2.93% or 2.34 to trade at $82.33 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.17% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.24% at 103.85.
