Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT, Financials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.03% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 6.13% or 5.33 points to trade at 92.24 at the close. Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ) added 5.67% or 1.45 points to end at 27.03 and Nuvei Corp (TSX:NVEI) was up 5.32% or 2.26 points to 44.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Spartan Delta Corp (TSX:SDE), which lost 4.32% or 0.21 points to trade at 4.65 in late trade. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX:TXG) declined 3.97% or 0.78 points to end at 18.86 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) shed 3.50% or 0.28 points to 7.73.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 632 to 324 and 138 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.57% to 12.16.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.15% or 2.90 to $1,964.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.01% or 1.52 to hit $77.27 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.95% or 1.56 to trade at $81.67 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.61% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.28% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.76% at 99.43.
