Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT, Materials and Real Estate sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.96%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO), which rose 7.23% or 0.52 points to trade at 7.71 at the close. Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX) added 6.88% or 0.43 points to end at 6.68 and IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG) was up 6.44% or 0.19 points to 3.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR), which lost 4.24% or 0.35 points to trade at 7.91 in late trade. Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TSX:TVE) declined 2.85% or 0.10 points to end at 3.41 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) shed 2.72% or 0.52 points to 18.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 600 to 361 and 107 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.79% to 12.24.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.02% or 19.65 to $1,945.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.41% or 1.12 to hit $78.52 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.37% or 1.15 to trade at $82.88 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.19% at 103.28.
