Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.77%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust (TO:CUF_u), which rose 5.52% or 0.59 points to trade at 11.27 at the close. Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC) added 4.98% or 0.45 points to end at 9.49 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) was up 4.83% or 0.20 points to 4.34 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TO:APHA), which lost 16.46% or 0.985 points to trade at 5.000 in late trade. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TO:ACB) declined 12.78% or 0.91 points to end at 6.21 and Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) shed 10.46% or 4.370 points to 37.420.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 661 to 423 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 12.38% to 14.37 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.28% or 3.50 to $1243.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.88% or 0.47 to hit $52.78 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.06% or 0.66 to trade at $61.42 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.74% to 0.7482, while CAD/EUR fell 0.78% to 0.6594.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 96.975.
