Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Utilities and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.72%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TO:NGD), which rose 11.72% or 0.150 points to trade at 1.430 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) added 8.41% or 0.84 points to end at 10.83 and Interfor Corp (TO:IFP) was up 5.80% or 0.83 points to 15.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Barrick Gold Corporation (TO:ABX), which lost 4.94% or 0.85 points to trade at 16.34 in late trade. NuVista Energy Ltd . (TO:NVA) declined 4.62% or 0.200 points to end at 4.130 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TO:ACB) shed 4.43% or 0.31 points to 6.68.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 717 to 401 and 104 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.71% to 20.87.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.28% or 3.65 to $1286.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.49% or 1.21 to hit $49.73 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.30% or 1.32 to trade at $58.65 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7533, while CAD/EUR rose 0.51% to 0.6584.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 95.500.
