Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.59%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Spartan Delta Corp (TSX:SDE), which rose 8.80% or 1.32 points to trade at 16.32 at the close. TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TSX:RNW) added 5.67% or 0.68 points to end at 12.67 and Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) was up 4.90% or 0.38 points to 8.13 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TSX:CG), which lost 18.13% or 1.63 points to trade at 7.36 in late trade. Dye & Durham Ltd (TSX:DND) declined 5.78% or 1.00 points to end at 16.30 and Nuvei Corp (TSX:NVEI) shed 2.51% or 1.18 points to 45.82.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 552 to 426 and 109 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.14% to 12.23.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.04% or 0.75 to $2,020.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.80% or 1.26 to hit $71.30 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.71% or 1.27 to trade at $75.44 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.62% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.40% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.24% at 102.26.
