Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Energy and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.42% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP), which rose 6.27% or 1.51 points to trade at 25.60 at the close. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) added 5.26% or 0.24 points to end at 4.80 and Dundee Precious Metals Inc (TSX:DPM) was up 4.44% or 0.34 points to 7.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC), which lost 8.96% or 3.27 points to trade at 33.23 in late trade. Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC) declined 5.54% or 1.01 points to end at 17.21 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) shed 3.71% or 0.75 points to 19.45.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 644 to 418 and 80 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.47% or 8.55 to $1813.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.91% or 0.65 to hit $70.61 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.54% or 0.39 to trade at $72.50 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.17% to 0.7977, while CAD/EUR fell 0.13% to 0.6723.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.00% at 92.067.
