Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Discretionary, IT and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.39% to hit a new 3-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CES Energy Solutions Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 8.50% or 0.390 points to trade at 4.980 at the close. Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) added 5.63% or 0.22 points to end at 4.13 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI) was up 3.75% or 0.27 points to 7.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which lost 6.15% or 0.040 points to trade at 0.610 in late trade. TransAlta Renewables Inc. (TO:RNW) declined 5.77% or 0.76 points to end at 12.42 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN) shed 5.18% or 0.160 points to 2.930.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 606 to 490 and 126 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.33% to 12.56.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.35% or 4.60 to $1305.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.54% or 0.36 to hit $67.00 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.80 to trade at $75.94 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.88% to 0.7634, while CAD/EUR rose 0.90% to 0.6591.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.37% at 94.84.
