Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.33% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Home Capital Group Inc . (TSX:HCG), which rose 14.31% or 4.15 points to trade at 33.15 at the close. CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE) added 4.00% or 1.37 points to end at 35.66 and Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX:ELD) was up 3.27% or 0.33 points to 10.43 in late trade.
Biggest losers included NFI Group Inc (TSX:NFI), which lost 11.97% or 3.55 points to trade at 26.10 in late trade. Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TSX:GOOS) declined 10.91% or 5.65 points to end at 46.13 and ShawCor Ltd . (TSX:SCL) shed 10.30% or 1.36 points to 11.85.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 537 to 516 and 127 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.65% to 9.40 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.69% or 10.05 to $1463.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.74% or 0.42 to hit $57.22 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.68% or 0.42 to trade at $62.48 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.14% to 0.7546, while CAD/EUR fell 0.07% to 0.6857.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 98.220.
