Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.17% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TO:BB), which rose 11.60% or 1.62 points to trade at 15.59 at the close. Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE) added 8.09% or 0.250 points to end at 3.340 and Secure Energy Services Inc . (TO:SES) was up 7.68% or 0.61 points to 8.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED), which lost 3.30% or 0.720 points to trade at 21.130 in late trade. Western Forest Products Inc (TO:WEF) declined 3.14% or 0.080 points to end at 2.470 and Cameco Corp (TO:CCO) shed 2.74% or 0.36 points to 12.80.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 664 to 497 and 124 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.39% to 10.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.35% or 4.40 to $1268.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.87% or 0.50 to hit $58.06 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.14% or 0.73 to trade at $64.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.40% to 0.7795, while CAD/EUR rose 0.12% to 0.6566.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.12% at 92.94.
