Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Utilities and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were GENIVAR Inc . (TSX:WSP), which rose 13.68% or 13.24 points to trade at 110.03 at the close. Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp (TSX:LIF) added 10.48% or 2.94 points to end at 31.00 and Descartes Systems Group Inc (TSX:DSG) was up 5.94% or 4.34 points to 77.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which lost 3.98% or 0.98 points to trade at 23.65 in late trade. ARC Resources Ltd . (TSX:ARX) declined 3.97% or 0.24 points to end at 5.92 and Ero Copper Corp (TSX:ERO) shed 3.79% or 0.78 points to 19.80.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 679 to 385 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.68% or 12.50 to $1842.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.93% or 0.42 to hit $45.70 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.14% or 0.55 to trade at $48.80 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.50% to 0.7780, while CAD/EUR rose 0.32% to 0.6410.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.44% at 90.718.
