Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG), which rose 9.25% or 0.38 points to trade at 4.49 at the close. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX:TXG) added 7.49% or 1.020 points to end at 14.640 and Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX:WCP) was up 7.33% or 0.30 points to 4.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included CannTrust Holdings Inc (TSX:TRST), which lost 12.90% or 0.6100 points to trade at 4.1200 in late trade. BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) declined 3.14% or 0.30 points to end at 9.25 and Manulife Financial Corporation (TSX:MFC) shed 2.27% or 0.56 points to 24.08.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 528 to 510 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.26% to 10.76.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.47% or 20.55 to $1421.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 4.22% or 2.44 to hit $60.27 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.07 to trade at $66.68 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.7647, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6794.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 96.718.
