Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Industrials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.10% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR), which rose 10.43% or 0.89 points to trade at 9.42 at the close. Finning International Inc . (TO:FTT) added 7.01% or 2.11 points to end at 32.20 and Kinross Gold Corporation (TO:K) was up 6.76% or 0.33 points to 5.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Empire Company Ltd (TO:EMPa), which lost 5.97% or 1.56 points to trade at 24.59 in late trade. ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) declined 5.22% or 0.070 points to end at 1.270 and MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) shed 4.20% or 0.22 points to 5.02.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 608 to 551 and 143 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.60% to 10.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.34% or 16.60 to $1258.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.72% or 0.41 to hit $56.73 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.20% or 0.76 to trade at $62.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.37% to 0.7802, while CAD/EUR fell 0.35% to 0.6597.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.69% at 93.41.
