Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Utilities and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were goeasy Ltd (TSX:GSY), which rose 6.27% or 10.26 points to trade at 173.81 at the close. Air Canada (TSX:AC) added 5.06% or 0.93 points to end at 19.31 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) was up 4.51% or 0.24 points to 5.56 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY), which lost 7.06% or 0.18 points to trade at 2.37 in late trade. TFI International Inc (TSX:TFII) declined 7.03% or 15.02 points to end at 198.77 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) shed 4.46% or 0.69 points to 14.78.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 506 to 412 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.13% to 15.17.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.84% or 20.25 to $2,387.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.99% or 2.55 to hit $82.81 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.83% or 2.55 to trade at $87.47 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.10% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.28% at 105.76.
