Nov 6 (Reuters) - Australian shares rose on Tuesday, tracking gains on Wall Street overnight with energy and material firms leading the way.

The S&P/ASX 200 index .AXJO 0.6 percent or 36.1 points to 5854.2 by 0120 GMT. The benchmark fell 0.5 percent on Monday.

Australian energy stocks .AXEJ saw some respite after oil prices bounced overnight after days of losses, which were driven by ramped up output from major producers Saudi Arabia and Russia and on demand worries. Oil came under pressure again in Asian trade Tuesday.

The energy sector managed to rebound 1.4 percent after declining over the past three sessions, with the nation's No. 2 independent gas producer, Santos STO.AX and Woodside Petroleum Ltd WPL.AX adding nearly 2 percent each.

Material stocks took heart from upbeat news out of China, Australia's largest trading partner, with the sub-index .AXMM up about 1 percent.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday promised to lower import tariffs and continue to broaden market access. miners BHP BHP.AX and Rio Tinto (LON:RIO) RIO.AX rose 0.8 percent and 1.8 percent respectively.

Financial stocks .AXFJ were also up 0.6 percent with the country's top two lenders rising about 1 percent each.

Link Administration Holdings Ltd LNK.AX , which is part of the consortium with CBA, gained 1.8 percent for its biggest gain in about three weeks. In separate statement, it added that the consortium would pay A$1.6 billion ($1.15 billion) for PEXA.

Westpac Banking Corp WBC.AX was up more than 1 percent despite reporting flat annual cash earnings growth on Monday. at Jefferies, while noting challenges for banks, kept Westpac as its top pick in the sector as it sees "more upside to earnings versus peers in the longer term from further simplification and productivity gains."

Investors will also be looking for any policy cues from the Reserve Bank of Australia's meeting later in the day, where it is widely expected to keep rates steady and stay sidelined well into next year, a Reuters poll showed. Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index .NZ50 rose 0.7 percent to 8,837.49.

Index heavyweight A2 Milk Company Ltd ATM.NZ was the top percentage gainer, rising 4.4 percent as investors wait for milk auction data scheduled later today, while Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation Ltd FPH.NZ rose 1.2 percent.
