SYDNEY, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said on Tuesday the tropical Pacific has reached La Nina temperature levels, with climate models suggesting the weather event would be weak and short-lived.
La Nina events are triggered when sea surface temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean drop to lower-than-normal levels, generally resulting in stormier, colder winters in Asia's northern hemisphere and warmer, wet summers in the southern hemisphere.
The BOM said in a statement that La Nina typically brought above-average rainfall to eastern Australia during late spring and summer.
