Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.42%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Le Groupe Jean Coutu PJC Inc (TO:PJCa), which rose 4.63% or 0.90 points to trade at 20.33 at the close. Atco Ltd (TO:ACOx) added 3.43% or 1.57 points to end at 47.28 and Canadian Utilities Limited (TO:CU) was up 3.09% or 1.14 points to 38.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DH Corp (TO:DH), which lost 43.38% or 12.45 points to trade at 16.25 in late trade. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) declined 6.89% or 0.65 points to end at 8.78 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) shed 6.73% or 0.210 points to 2.910.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 655 to 478 and 146 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.85% to 14.33.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.51% or 6.45 to $1267.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.54% or 0.77 to hit $49.19 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.73% or 0.88 to trade at $49.91 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.19% to 0.7476, while CAD/EUR fell 0.33% to 0.6855.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.08% at 98.61.
