Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MEG Energy Corp (TSX:MEG), which rose 33.76% or 0.53 points to trade at 2.10 at the close. Frontera Energy Corp (TSX:FEC) added 30.69% or 0.93 points to end at 3.96 and Cenovus Energy Inc (TSX:CVE) was up 23.16% or 0.63 points to 3.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which lost 9.70% or 52.98 points to trade at 493.23 in late trade. Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX:LSPD) declined 9.58% or 1.51 points to end at 14.25 and Corus Entertainment Inc (TSX:CJRb) shed 8.37% or 0.21 points to 2.30.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 728 to 326 and 87 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 3.10% or 49.40 to $1640.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 22.85% or 4.64 to hit $24.95 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 21.02% or 5.20 to trade at $29.94 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.31% to 0.7067, while CAD/EUR rose 1.28% to 0.6506.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 100.155.
