Investing.com - It has been reported that a significant amount of military hardware is making its way from China to Russia, cleverly circumventing the sanctions imposed by the West in light of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.
Manufacturers based in China are reportedly facilitating large-scale equipment transfers intended to bolster Russian forces involved in the Ukrainian conflict. The supplies range from drones capable of guiding artillery attacks and launching grenades on Ukrainian troops, thermal-optical sights for nocturnal soldier targeting, as well as defensive gear and additional drones.
Over $100 million worth of drone technology alone has been imported into Russia from Chinese sources this year. These materials are classified as nonlethal and dual-purpose; hence they can serve both civilian and military functions. This classification allows Chinese enterprises an opportunity to navigate around existing restrictions and continue their supply operations.
This issue gains significance amidst prior apprehensions about potential assistance provided by Chinese firms toward Russian war efforts in Ukraine. During his recent diplomatic tour of China, U.S Secretary of State Antony Blinken appealed directly to President Xi Jinping for strict oversight over private companies participating indirectly in aiding Russian military actions against Ukraine.
China maintains a public posture of impartiality concerning the situation but appears closer than ever with Russia since hostilities began – evident through increased state visits, trade activities, and augmenting purchases of Russian oil products.
Moreover, it isn't unprecedented that Chinese businesses have facilitated support for Russian military activities. Earlier instances this year saw shipments including hunting rifles, body armor units along with drone components directed towards helping Putin's campaign in Ukraine.
