WhatsApp has launched a proxy support feature in a bid to provide continued connectivity if its services are blocked or disrupted.
While introducing the new feature, the company said that it has “put power into people’s hands” in the event of an internet shutdown like the one that happened in Iran recently.
Implementing a proxy service enables connectivity to WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and organisations around the world.
What's more, WhatsApp is encouraging its users to help establish proxy servers in regions that are facing internet scrutiny and blockades.
We continue to fight for your right to communicate freely and privately. Now, when connecting to WhatsApp directly is not possible, you can stay connected around the world through a server set up by volunteers and organizations dedicated to helping others communicate freely.

Secure and reliable communication
In a blogpost, WhatsApp said: “Our wish for 2023 is that these internet shutdowns never occur.
“Disruptions like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help.
“Though in case these shutdowns continue, we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication."
Big news for Iranians. The Islamic Republic has been blocking WhatsApp for months.
Today, WhatsApp has setup proxy support to help Iranians get around these blocks

Assuring privacy and security
WhatsApp has assured a high level of privacy and security for those connecting via the proxy network.
The communication continues to be protected by end-to-end encryption — ensuring they stay secure and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta.
