Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Gas, Water & Multiutilities, Automobiles & Parts and Oil & Gas Producers sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 declined 1.09% to hit a new 52-week low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Randgold Resources Ltd (LON:RRS), which rose 3.18% or 212.00 points to trade at 6886.00 at the close. Mediclinic International PLC (LON:MDCM) added 2.79% or 8.70 points to end at 320.40 and Travis Perkins PLC (LON:TPK) was up 2.58% or 27.50 points to 1092.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included National Grid PLC (LON:NG), which lost 9.17% or 76.60 points to trade at 758.70 in late trade. Provident Financial PLC (LON:PFG) declined 3.76% or 22.60 points to end at 578.60 and Shire PLC (LON:SHP) shed 3.56% or 161.50 points to 4371.00.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1294 to 791 and 289 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.06% or 0.75 to $1252.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 5.00% or 2.51 to hit $47.69 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.81% or 2.27 to trade at $57.34 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.30% to 1.2655, while EUR/GBP fell 0.13% to 0.8983.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 96.480.
