Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Fixed Line Telecommunications, Pharmaceuticals & Biotech and Tobacco sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 declined 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Carnival PLC (LON:CCL), which rose 5.17% or 38.40 points to trade at 781.60 at the close. Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LON:SMT) added 4.78% or 38.20 points to end at 838.20 and Ashtead Group PLC (LON:AHT) was up 3.43% or 135.00 points to 4,074.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DS Smith PLC (LON:SMDS), which lost 3.83% or 11.30 points to trade at 283.60 in late trade. AstraZeneca PLC (LON:AZN) declined 2.80% or 314.00 points to end at 10,918.00 and Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (LON:RR) shed 1.94% or 1.82 points to 92.03.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1016 to 776 and 505 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.56% or 9.60 to $1,701.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.73% or 0.74 to hit $100.00 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.53% or 0.57 to trade at $106.78 a barrel.
GBP/USD was unchanged 0.26% to 1.20, while EUR/GBP unchanged 0.19% to 0.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 106.97.
