MG, the British automaker now under Chinese ownership, has launched Australia's first new electric vehicle (EV) priced under $40,000, making it Australia’s most affordable EV.
The entry-level ‘Excite’ version of the MG4, priced from $38,990 before on-road costs, marks a significant milestone for the electric vehicle market in the country.
Unveiling of the all-electric hatchback comes days before BYD is set to disclose prices for its own "affordable" EV, which could potentially incite a price war within the EV market, particularly among Chinese manufacturers.
EV market
This unveiling comes at a critical time, with increasing interest among Australians in making the transition to electric transport.
Recent figures indicate that the share of EVs in the country's new car market is above 7% with more than 20% in the ACT.
Previously, the EV market was somewhat limited for consumers seeking vehicles priced under $50,000.
MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao spoke about the challenges faced by Australians due to increasing cost of living pressures.
He emphasised that MG's focus on creating affordable and accessible cars, such as the MG4, would help Australians switch to electric vehicles sooner.
350-kilometre range
In terms of performance, the new entry-level variant adds to the attractiveness of the MG4 lineup, offering a range of 350 kilometres, powered by its 125-kilowatt motor and acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
The MG4 will be the first EV based on MG’s new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which allows for 50:50 weight distribution and advanced, thinner battery technology.
The MSP platform is also designed to offer scalability for future EVs while delivering on greater interior and storage space throughout the car.
In addition to its design and performance features, the MG4 comes standard with the MG Pilot safety suite.
This includes an array of features such as active emergency braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, intelligent speed limit assist with traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist with lane departure warning system, driver attention alert and intelligent high beam assist.
Furthermore, MG will also offer a 7-year, unlimited kilometre fully transferable warranty as standard on the MG4.
