Italy - Factors to watch on Sept. 15

The following factors could affect Italian markets on Tuesday.

ECONOMY

ISTAT releases August final CPI and HICP data (0800 GMT).

Bank of Italy releases August data on public finances, state borrowing and debt.

(*) European Affairs Minister Enzo Amendola told Il Messaggero that EU funds should be spent for "few big objectives rather than being scattered in thousands of different strands", speaking in an interview with daily Il Messaggero.

COMPANIES

FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILES FCHA.MI , PSA PEUP.PA

Peugeot-maker PSA and Fiat Chrysler (FCA) said on Monday they had restructured the terms of their planned merger to conserve cash, and also stepped up the promised levels of cost cutting during the continuing pandemic. NEXII NEXII.MI

Italian payment firms Nexi NEXII.MI and smaller rival SIA are nearing a preliminary agreement for a merger, la Repubblica daily reported. It said Italian State lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, which controls Sia, will be an anchor investor in the combined entity.

The Italian oil major is set to enter into the second stage of a two-round process to sell its natural gas assets in Australia, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on Tuesday. The paper said Eni, which is advised by Citi, will launch a competitive process, adding Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) Infrastructure, Macquaire, Medco Energi, Apa, Beach Energy and Rocoil have joined the race

Talks between the Italian infrastructure group and State lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti over the future of Atlantia 's motorway unit Autostrade per l'Italia are close to collapsing, because of a letter sent by Atlantia to the European Commission, daily la Repubblica reported. In the letter, Atlantia says the Italian government's behaviour does not respect EU rules and asks the Commission to intervene with an infraction procedure, the report added.

Italy's market regulator CONSOB is expected to approve in the next few days the investor prospectus for a 800-million euro cash call needed by BPER to buy 532 bank branches, as part of Intesa Sanpaolo 's takeover of rival UBI, Il Messaggero reported.

The sale could be postponed by a couple of months to the first quarter of next year, the report added.

Rothschild, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (NYSE:BAC) and Citi are advising BPER on the deal, while Mediobanca, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Citi are joint lead manager for the right issue, Il Messaggero said.

The Italian space company might consider M&A plans as the coronavirus crisis could prompt a consolidation in the sector, Avio's Chief executive Giulio Ranzo told daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

Infrastructure group Macquaire will decide on Tuesday on a binding offer for Enel 's 50% stake in Open Fiber, Il Messaggero daily reported on Tuesday, adding the Australian fund is assigning a 3 billion euro equity value to Enel's holding.

CNH INDUSTRIAL CNHI.MI

Nikola Corp NKLA.O and vehicle equipment maker CNH Industrial said the firms are working together to build prototypes of the EV maker's Tre semi-truck, sending Nikola's shares up 12%, days after a scathing report from short-seller Hindenburg alleged the company of 'fraud'. A2.MI

Italy's competition watchdog has opened an inquiry into the planned merger between Italy's biggest utility A2A and smaller local rival AEB on the grounds the tie up could create a dominant position in gas distribution in certain gas tender areas.

Italy's antitrust said on Tuesday it had imposed a 5-million euro fine - the highest possible amount - on the mail operator for its irregular commercial practices in the delivery of registered mail.
