Investing.com -- Shares of Global Cord Blood Corp (NYSE:CO) spiked Tuesday after reports that a woman in New York appears to have been cured of an HIV infection.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the woman has shown no signs of the virus in testing since she stopped treatment in October 2020 after a transplant of stem cells with a rare genetic mutation that blocks HIV invasion.
The transplant of stem cells is said to be from an adult relative and umbilical-cord blood from a newborn the woman is not related to.
Global Cord Blood Corp engages in the provision of cord blood banking services, providing a cord blood processing and storage service.
According to WSJ, the doctors said they believe the woman's HIV is in long-term remission, suggesting a cure if it holds.
Global Blood Corp shares hit a high of $5.50 on the news, after opening up the session at $4.19.
