In a strategic move highlighting its commitment to the North American electric vehicle market, Evolution Energy Minerals Ltd (ASX:EV1) has appointed Stacy Newstead as CEO of its wholly-owned US subsidiary, Evolution Energy Solutions LLC.

She will lead the implementation of the company’s downstream processing strategy, with the end goal of producing coated spherical purified graphite (CSPG) on US soil.

“We are delighted to have secured someone of Stacy’s calibre,” Evolution Energy Minerals non-executive chair Henk Ludik said.

“The development of a downstream business to produce coated spherical graphite and other high-value graphite products is central to our strategy to become a vertically integrated business.

“Stacy’s extensive experience in bringing products to market and accessing government funding support will be invaluable as we embark upon the next 12-24 months of activity.”

US Government focus on battery metals

Newstead has an extensive background in leadership roles related to product development, renewable energy, battery, power and energy storage markets, and supply chain security.

She previously held senior positions at Huntington Ingalls Industries and Textron (NYSE:TXT) Systems, where she worked closely with the US military and the Department of Defence.

She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Maryland and an MBA from the University of Baltimore.

Newstead’s appointment comes at a time when the US Government is emphasising the secure supply of battery anode materials, as demonstrated in several policy initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the US Mineral Security Partnership.

Her previous experience in dealing with government entities could aid Evolution in leveraging the funding provided under these initiatives.

“The appointment of Stacy is an important accomplishment for Evolution, given her track record and global experience,” Evolution Energy Minerals managing director Phil Hoskins said.

“It is also recognition of Evolution’s commitment to downstream processing and the work undertaken to date, including test work results that confirmed the exceptional electrochemical performance characteristics of Chilalo graphite as precursor material for coated spherical graphite for use in lithium-ion batteries.

“Stacy’s immediate focus will be to explore opportunities for financial support from the Federal and State governments in the US.”
