Elon Musk has incorporated a new AI company called X.AI Corp. in Nevada, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
As per the filing, Musk is listed as the director of the company, while Jared Birchall, known for being Musk's right-hand man, is listed as the secretary.
Despite calling for a six-month halt in the development of AI tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Musk is forging ahead with his own AI projects.
Musk has made significant AI-related hires recently, including Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss from DeepMind, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s AI subsidiary.
Contradicts 'call for pause'
This comes at a time when tech leaders including Musk and researchers from around the world are sounding the alarm about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.
The signatories which also included a host of other AI CEOs and CTOs cited concerns that "human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity", among other things.
More than 2,600 of them have signed an open letter published by the US think tank Future of Life Institute (FOLI), urging a temporary pause on further AI development.
The letter calls on all AI companies to "immediately pause" training AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months, citing "profound risks to society and humanity".
