Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the IT, Healthcare and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.15%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE), which rose 7.75% or 0.55 points to trade at 7.65 at the close. West Fraser Timber Co Ltd (TSX:WFG) added 5.50% or 6.19 points to end at 118.71 and Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TSX:TVE) was up 5.05% or 0.27 points to 5.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which lost 11.18% or 56.01 points to trade at 445.13 in late trade. BRP Inc (TSX:DOO) declined 10.37% or 10.43 points to end at 90.15 and Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED) shed 8.45% or 0.50 points to 5.42.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 592 to 435 and 83 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.57% to 17.60.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.95% or 17.85 to $1,853.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.93% or 3.43 to hit $120.30 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 3.12% or 3.67 to trade at $121.28 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 0.79, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.12% to 0.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 102.17.
