Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.26%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Equinox Gold Corp (TSX:EQX), which rose 9.91% or 0.68 points to trade at 7.54 at the close. Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY) added 4.84% or 0.15 points to end at 3.25 and EQB Inc (TSX:EQB) was up 4.63% or 2.76 points to 62.38 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ), which lost 20.77% or 8.95 points to trade at 34.15 in late trade. Thomson Reuters Corp (TSX:TRI) declined 4.51% or 8.03 points to end at 170.09 and Descartes Systems Group Inc (TSX:DSG) shed 4.49% or 4.79 points to 101.78.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 517 to 456 and 106 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.98% to 14.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.77% or 15.50 to $2,038.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 4.76% or 3.41 to hit $68.25 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 4.38% or 3.30 to trade at $72.02 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.40% to 0.66.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.56% at 101.15.
