Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Clean Technology and IT sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Chartwell Retirement Residences (TSX:CSH_u), which rose 2.88% or 0.25 points to trade at 8.94 at the close. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR) added 2.52% or 0.24 points to end at 9.77 and Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) was up 2.27% or 0.23 points to 10.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Altus Group Limited (TSX:AIF), which lost 5.28% or 3.08 points to trade at 55.24 in late trade. Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED) declined 5.21% or 0.10 points to end at 1.82 and Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) shed 4.55% or 2.89 points to 60.60.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 583 to 361 and 115 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.33% to 13.20.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.48% or 9.55 to $2,016.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.64% or 2.09 to hit $77.15 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.78% or 2.31 to trade at $80.81 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.17% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 101.54.
