Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Industrials, Energy and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.15%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 10.95% or 6.25 points to trade at 63.34 at the close. SilverCrest Metals Inc (TSX:SIL) added 8.18% or 0.73 points to end at 9.65 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX:FVI) was up 7.60% or 0.39 points to 5.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX:AAV), which lost 5.30% or 0.47 points to trade at 8.39 in late trade. Canadian National Railway Company (TSX:CNR) declined 4.67% or 7.74 points to end at 158.17 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) shed 3.80% or 0.35 points to 8.86.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 546 to 442 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.47% to 14.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.61% or 11.85 to $1,947.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.47% or 0.38 to hit $80.51 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.30% or 0.26 to trade at $86.39 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.09% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.40% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 101.40.
