Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT, Clean Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 2.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 21.31% or 14.42 points to trade at 82.08 at the close. Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX:GIL) added 14.78% or 5.72 points to end at 44.43 and Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD) was up 14.74% or 2.55 points to 19.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 15.40% or 1.11 points to trade at 6.10 in late trade. Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TSX:MFI) declined 8.04% or 2.21 points to end at 25.28 and Colliers International Group Inc Bats (TSX:CIGI) shed 7.70% or 9.90 points to 118.59.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 810 to 187 and 90 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 10.97% to 14.69 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.26% or 5.25 to $1,992.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.54% or 2.04 to hit $82.48 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 2.59% or 2.19 to trade at $86.82 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.80% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.35% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.64% at 106.04.
