Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy, Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM), which rose 9.36% or 0.64 points to trade at 7.48 at the close. Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) added 7.16% or 3.72 points to end at 55.71 and Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS) was up 6.81% or 0.35 points to 5.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included IAMGold Corporation (TSX:IMG), which lost 3.26% or 0.12 points to trade at 3.56 in late trade. BELLUS Health Inc. (TSX:BLU) declined 3.11% or 0.35 points to end at 10.89 and Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) shed 2.22% or 1.25 points to 54.99.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 775 to 222 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.64% to 17.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.65% or 30.45 to $1,871.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.14% or 0.10 to hit $73.77 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.10 to trade at $78.59 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.92% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.21% to 0.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.11% at 103.66.
